News & Discussion regarding the MapHist Forum

Categories and Subjects

Postby Peter van der Krogt » Sat 31 Dec 2011, 18:06

I see some new beta testers are subscribed to this brandnew MapHist forum.

One of the things under discussion at the moment is the division in Categories (the names in white capitals in dark blue background on the main screen) and the forums (the lower case dark blue names on light blue background).

Especially the question of the category 'THE FIELD OF THE HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY" should be renamed "ANNOUNCEMENTS" and if the Forum "Other topics" there should be removed, since the difference with the "Other discussion forum" in the next category is not clear.

Ideas welcome.

Peter (my last post of this year).

I made some changes today, and renamed categories.

Peter:

I'm happy with the categories as you now have them. The very final category of "Other" probably won't get much use, but it's still necessary.

Best,

In the division of categories and subjects, I'm curious about using the year 1650 as a dividing line in discussion. Since there was such a flourishing of map publication in the mid-1600s, should I post questions regarding, say, a Jansson or a Blaeu map in the pre-1650 or the post-1650 category?

You are right. I have changed the names and explanation.

I'd find it helpful if 'Publications' were split off from "Exhibitions & Meetings." I'm a little off the beaten path and don't get out much.

One thing that I find very useful on another forum to which I belong, is to have an option to list or show new posts since my last visit. Is it possible to add something like that?

Thanks,

Thanks for pointing that out, Jay. It wasn't immediately apparent to me.

Another thing that would be useful would be to have a "last post" link on the summaries so that one could go to that more quickly than clicking on the thread topic. Maybe I missed that short cut, too?

Ahha, skip that last suggestion! I found it, the little page icon next to the name. The name for it shows up when resting the cursor on it, which I'd not done earlier.
