Assistance w/ Identification

Postby Karen Pinto » Sat 07 Jan 2012, 21:52

OK here goes. My first attempt to use this new forum :P

I am trying to find the ms. number and location for this T-O map but try as I may it is eluding me. I know I have it somewhere in one of my many medieval European map books & aerticles but the needle is not emerging out of the haystack. It is as I recall 12/13th c.
Does anyone know the ms. number and folio for this map and secondary source listings on it?

Thanks in advance.

I see one reference to this specific image as being from:

[Detail] Diagrammatic T-O map. The world is portrayed as a circle divided by a 'T' shape into three continents; Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Title of Book: Etymologies
Author: Isidore, Saint, Bishop of Seville
Production: 12th century
Language: Latin

From The British Library; Record Number - c5933-06; Shelfmark - Royal 12 F. IV; Page Folio Number - f.135v.

I'm sure Evelyn Edson would know, if she sees this. Also, perhaps the BL could verify this citation as applicable to the specific image you note.

Thanks, Joel. Your amazing! How did you find it so quickly? I have 3 Edson books open and a couple of her articles and other books too and I don't have it listed in any of these. Its another book that I haven't found yet. Why do we forget so easily? Memory is such a battle especially while writing.

If anyone has further info on this ms., I would appreciate it.
thanks again, Karen

Mainly a couple of keywords, and a direct search in Google Images. And I've been able to verify it in British Library Images Online. I knew I'd also seen it before.

Do you have a link for the BL Online Images cat in which you found it. I did the Google search too but came up with naught.
You must be a Google champ. :)

Go to their advanced search page: http://imagesonline.bl.uk/?service=search&action=show_advanced_search_page&language= and enter in the shelfmark line "Royal 12 F. IV" (without quotes). There will be a number of images that pop-up, but you can see it quickly.
