What are they doing to that poor dog?

On the bottom of Janssonius's "Tabulae Italiae", there are some vignettes of Italy- one of them being some men with dogs. On the right hand side, they seem to be entering a noxious cave with the dog on a leash but on the left, they are dropping the leashed dog in the water. Can anyone explain what exactly is going on in this engraving? Thanks! --Anna
